Custody Processing
Proper custody processing ensures legal compliance, procedural accuracy, and officer accountability. Follow this guide to process suspects correctly.
Important: Never leave a suspect unattended in a cell. Failure to process them properly may result in their release and disciplinary action.
Custody Process
- Arrest & Search
- Arrest the suspect and conduct a search under Section 32 of the PACE Act 1984.
- Search at the scene, not the PD.
- Confiscate weapons, contraband, or illegal items.
- Transport to Custody
- Escort the suspect to PD custody cells.
- Ensure safe and prompt transportation.
- Lawyer Rights
- Inform the suspect of their right to legal representation.
- If they cannot afford one, they are entitled to a free lawyer.
- Interrogation
- Escort the suspect to an interrogation room.
- Ensure they understand their rights before questioning.
- Record the interrogation if needed for evidence.
- Sentencing & Transportation
- If guilty, transport the suspect to HMP (prison).
- Use the MDT system (Press F10 → Computer menu) to process their sentences.
